GCSE Sociology is a Key Stage 4 only subject.  It offers students a powerful lens through which to explore the world around them. It’s the study of society — how it’s structured, how it changes, and how people interact within it. This subject encourages students to question assumptions, think critically, and understand the social forces that shape our lives.

Students will investigate key themes such as:

  • Families and households – how family life varies and evolves
  • Education – the role of schools and the impact of social class, gender, and ethnicity
  • Crime and deviance – why people break rules and how society responds
  • Social stratification – how inequality affects opportunities and life chances
  • Research methods – how sociologists gather and interpret evidence

Sociology is ideal for students who enjoy discussion, debate, and exploring different viewpoints. It builds skills in analysis, evaluation, and written communication — all highly valued in further education and careers in law, journalism, politics, social work, and more.

This subject helps students make sense of the world — and their place within it.
