Extreme Weather Conditions

Dear Parents and Carers, I wanted to update you regarding the effect of the extreme temperatures on the school site today, and plans for tomorrow. We opened Ratton School today to follow Department for education guidance The Education Hub that schools do not normally close, and because we also agree that school attendance is the best way for pupils to learn and reach their potential, and hot weather can usually be managed safely. However, the effect of the heat on our older buildings has led to temperatures of 30 degrees and over by 10am in many classrooms in the building, with the prospect of temperatures only becoming hotter throughout the day. Additionally, we do not have enough cool classrooms and spaces to re room these classes as the day goes on and the heat rises. This will have an impact on the safety of students and staff. As a result we will take the decision to close the school at 12.20pm at the end of lesson 3 today. We will release all students who have parental permission The weather is forecasted at present to be hotter than today tomorrow. With the safety and comfort of staff in mind regrettably and reluctantly we have taken the decision to remain closed for the day tomorrow, Thursday 25th June. Thank you for your support and understanding. Just a polite reminder we have an INSET day on Friday and only Year 11 students will be expected for valediction in the afternoon. School will reopen on Monday 29th June. Stay safe in the heat, an we look forward to seeing students again on Monday.
